Communications for Organizations That Can't Afford to Get the Story Wrong
Breakout Communications works with tech companies, AI labs, startups, and mission-driven organizations at the moments that matter most.
Relationships with reporters are built over years, not spun up for a single campaign. We bring existing connections across tech, business, and philanthropic media, and a track record of placements that move the needle.
A product, platform, or funding announcement only gets one first impression. We help you figure out the story before you tell it — the angle, the timing, the spokespeople, and the follow-through that keeps momentum going after day one.
Before you can tell your story, you need to know what it is. We work with founders, executives, and communications teams to develop messaging that holds up across audiences, channels, and time — and that your team can actually use.
The best organizational narratives are carried by people, not press releases. We help executives develop a credible, consistent public voice — op-eds, speaking opportunities, media prep, and the kind of steady presence that builds reputation over time.
When something goes sideways, the first hour matters. We've managed communications through airline accidents, active shooter incidents, and high-profile organizational challenges. We bring calm, clear thinking to situations that tend to generate neither.
Not every story belongs in a press release. We develop content strategies, newsletters, blog editorial, and long-form pieces that give organizations a voice between announcements.
Breakout works best with organizations at an inflection point where the stakes are real, the timeline is tight, and the right story genuinely matters.
That includes:
AI & emerging tech companies navigating a communications environment that moves faster than any playbook.
Startups that need senior-level communications thinking before they're ready to hire a full-time team.
Scaling companies that need extra capacity around a launch, announcement, or communications build-out.
Mission-driven organizations, foundations, and nonprofits whose work deserves the same storytelling rigor as any product launch.
Before starting Breakout Communications, Sean led external communications at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, where he managed communications for its Education work and Ventures portfolio — including launches, funding announcements, and thought leadership across the education, technology, and AI spaces.
Prior to CZI, he led PR for Ancestry's Spotify DNA partnership and spent nearly ten years at Virgin America, where his work included a Cannes Lion-winning safety video that generated over 700 million impressions, a grassroots advocacy campaign that secured the airline's access to Dallas Love Field, and communications through the company's IPO and acquisition.
The through line across all of it: a belief that the organizations doing the most consequential work are often the ones most in need of someone who can help the world understand why it matters.
